Why vague dress codes create confusion.

“Semi-formal” means tuxedos to some guests and khakis to others. By the time your October event rolls around, half your guests are texting asking what to wear, and the other half shows up having guessed wrong.

The fix? Give guests a visual reference.

We’ve seen our clients nail dress code communication three different ways, and they all work because they show, not just tell.

  • Option 1: The QR Code Pinterest Board

Create a playful dress code title like “Gucci Garden,” “Beachy Gala,” or “Modern Boho Luxe,” then include a QR code on your details card that links directly to a Pinterest board. Guests scan, scroll through 10-15 outfit inspiration images, and instantly get the vibe. Pro tip: Pin examples for different body types and budgets so everyone feels included.

  • Option 2: Inspiration Photos on Your Invite

Add 2-3 small inspiration images directly on your invite or event website – think: a flowy midi dress, a linen suit, dressy sandals. It takes up minimal real estate but gives guests exactly what you’re picturing. This works especially well for destination events or outdoor venues where practical footwear matters.

  • Option 3: Detailed Descriptors

Skip the generic terms and get specific with warm language: “We’re going for garden party vibes; think midi dresses in soft colors, linen blazers, and breathable fabrics. The ceremony is outdoors on grass, so save the stilettos and go for block heels or dressy flats instead.”

The email template that ties it all together:

Subject: What to Wear to Our Wedding

Hey! Quick note about attire for [Date].

We’re calling the vibe [Gucci Garden / Beachy Gala / Desert Romance] – think [flowing fabrics and earthy tones / elevated beach chic with metallics / jewel tones and textured layers].

[CHOOSE ONE:]

  • Check out our wedding website for outfit inspo photos
  • Translation: [midi dresses and blazers / floor-length gowns and suits / sundresses and linen]

One practical note: The ceremony is outdoors on [grass / cobblestones / sand], so stilettos might be tricky, but we love a good block heel or dressy flat.

Can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Why all three work: They give guests a clear visual reference while keeping your tone warm and helpful, not bossy.

Austin vs DC tip: Hill Country venues mean sun and heat, so your visuals should show breathable fabrics and lighter colors. DC in the fall? Include layering options since your venue might have cobblestones or require coat check.
